KLBC Activities Report for January 2017

7 January 2017
3rd KL Bar Pool Tournament 2017
This tournament was held on 7 January 2017 at 5ive Star Pool & Billiard SS15, Ground Floor, Subang Square Corporate Tower, Jalan SS15/4G. It was doubles competition with a handicap system to promote participation amongst new players. In total 10 pairs registered to play with the final, played on 19 January 2017.

There was only 1 mixed doubles pair and 1 ladies doubles pair. They created a surprise when they both qualified for the semi-finals, beating out some more fancied pairs.

The semi-finals were opposite affairs, one being a lopsided 8-0 win and the other going down to the wire with the ladies doubles pair losing 6-9 after leading 6-5 and needing only one more frame to win. The final was a cagey one though sprinkled with some excellent safety shots and kick shots. Eventually, Michael Tan Ching Hooi and Eugene Teo ran out deserving winners by a score of 9-6!

Pupils' Night Out
The Pupils' Night Out, held on 13 January 2017 at BAR SHACK, Bangsar Baru, was a success with a crowd of over 50 people, comprising pupils and members of the Bar, coming early and staying past midnight. The objective of the event was to allow the young members of the legal fraternity to come together, forge good relationships, and meet and greet practising lawyers who were more than willing to share their experiences. It was the second edition of the event for the term of the Pupils Committee 2016/17.



15 January 2017
KL Bar Run 2017
The third KL Bar Run (“Run”) was held on 15 January 2017 at the Lake Gardens. A record breaking total of 93 teams with 372 runners comprising of members of the Bar, pupils-in-chambers and law graduates participated in this event.

The Run was flagged off at 7:00 am by the Chairman of the Kuala Lumpur Bar, Ravin Singh. Team Speedy Gonzalez emerged as champions with the first runners-up and second runners-up going to Team MO4 and Team Front Runners (Shearn Delamore & Co) respectively.

The Fanciest Dressed Award was won by Team DOH! (Chooi & Co) who came dressed as characters from The Simpsons with second place going to Team ADJ and third place going to Team Agony of Defeet.

Prizes were also given to the fourth and fifth fastest teams as well as the top three individual fastest male and female runners. Team We Thought It Was KL Bar Rum emerged winners for the inaugural Best Name Category.

Seminar on Take Over Rules 2016
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Wong Tat Chung on 17 January 2017 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 84 participants. The seminar covered the important changes to Malaysian Regulation of Take-Overs and Mergers.



19 January 2017
Pupils Introduction Session
As a monthly tradition organised by the Pupils Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session for January was held on 19 January 2017. The session, attended by 94 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. The purpose of the session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions. Like previous sessions, the pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

Seminar on The Reciprocal Enforcement of Foreign Judgment
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Lua Ai Siew on 20 January 2017 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 47 participants. The seminar covered the following topics: "Reciprocal Enforcement of Judgment Act 1958 (REJA)"; "Registration of judgment - ROC Order 67"; "Application to set aside registration of judgment"; "Grounds for setting aside registration of Judgment.  Is registration of gambling debt against public policy? See Marina Bay Sands Pte Ltd v Ng Kong Seong [2016] MLJU 767 and Resorts World at Sentosa Pte Ltd v Lim Soo Kok - [2016] MLJU 700"; "Effect of registration"; "Enforcement of Judgment from High Court in Malaysia"; "Foreign Judgment outside the ambit of REJA"; and "Foreign Arbitral awards - Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards (New York Convention), section 38 of the Arbitration Act 2005 and ROC Order 69. Seminar on Case Management and Trial of Intellectual Property Cases
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by YA Datuk Wong Kian Kheong on 21 January 2017 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 60 participants.

16th Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Bar Games 2017
The 16th Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Bar Games was held on 21 January 2017 at Persada PLUS Sports Complex with the Selangor Bar playing hosts. Kuala Lumpur Bar emerged triumphant in an unprecedented clean sweep over Selangor Bar. Kuala Lumpur Bar ended with an overall score of 7-0, winning at golf, netball, volleyball, badminton, ladies futsal, men’s futsal and football to lift the Lall Singh Muker Challenge Trophy. The Prize Giving Dinner was held at the Cafeteria, Persada Plus Sports Complex and was well attended by the participants from the Kuala Lumpur Bar.

Seminar on Tax Savings for Partners
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Lim Ken Chai on 25 January 2017 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 38 participants.
